Imaging is when our minds imagine sound to be in a place it is physically not. This can be applied by our minds imagining sound between speakers whereas the sound is moving through the move. It is how our minds perceive and fill in the gaps of sound.

This process of visual representing i believe would help me with my future mixes as it acts as a guide. If i felt that my track sounded sparse with no fullness i could use the visuals and see if there are gaps that i could mix to fill in. I also could see if there is too much going on in one area, for example the lower frequencies, and i could use this to balance out frequencies. Mixing for a certain amount of time can slightly hinder your listening skills so using this as a guide would really help to enhance your ears.

By being conscious of imaging, each sound becomes more apparent when mixing so you can identify issues easier and how to improve the track.

When creating a visual representation for Night Air by Jamie Woon i found it to be easy in identifying each sound and where to place them as every sound stands out and doesn’t fight with any other instrument. The mixing for this track utilises the stereo field to create a very spacious sounding track. I would say there is no area in terms of mixing that has been overworked.
